BC Place opened in 1983 as British Columbia's first domed stadium, built primarily to host the 1986 World Exposition and to provide a versatile venue for sports and entertainment. It has been the home of the BC Lions (CFL) since its opening and the Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) since 2011. Notable events include the 2010 Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup final, and the 2011 Grey Cup. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BC Place will host group stage matches and a knockout round game, having undergone a $563 million renovation completed in 2011 that replaced its air-supported roof with a retractable one.
